Atlanta Arts & Entertainment makes its inaugural appearance as a community-oriented platform
Historically, pivoting in basketball or the business world indicated that fundamental changes had to be made to a strategy or operation. In five months, pivoting became part of our daily vocabulary as well as a more personal component of our daily lives.
As established by Atlanta City Council legislation in 2017, the Arts & Entertainment Atlanta district (A&E Atlanta) aims to activate Downtown Atlanta as a neighborhood and economic development initiative in partnership with media companies and property owners.
Managed outdoor media can bring exciting, unique cultural and public space programming into the city's core by supporting Downtown activity. Additionally, revenue from digital and static signs in the district (limited to 25 locations) supports art partnerships and artistic endeavours aimed at elevating local artists.
Downtown Atlanta is well-known for its commercial activity, but programs like Arts & Entertainment Atlanta make Downtown a creative hub as well.
Our initial activation and programming will take place in 2020, as our signs began appearing on the Internet late in 2019. Seven active sign locations are currently in place, including 101 Marietta, Peachtree Center, The Westin Peachtree Plaza, and others, with several additional installations being considered.
We never imagined that our reality would shift so dramatically when the program kicked off in its inaugural year. And so, we pivoted. With support from Orange Barrel Media and BIG Outdoor, the signs have taken on a whole new sense of community value. Arts & Entertainment Atlanta offers timely public service announcements about COVID-19 testing, showcases local artistssuch as Sarah Price's Separate Togetherand provides a platform to social justice movements.
As well as responding to current events through the signs, we have also been able to sustain planned arts programs. A current outdoor exhibition titled In Light explores themes of connection and uncertainty. Three of the digital signs in the district are covered in artwork by Atlanta artists—101 Marietta, 235 Peachtree Street (at the Peachtree Center), and 89 Centennial Olympic Atlanta Park Drive (at the Reverb Hotel by Hard Rock).
We yearn for connection and understanding at a time when art outdoors is more relevant than ever.
It's the quality of art that allows you to slow down, and for a moment see things you used to ignore as valuable. Kehinde Wiley
A year after it was founded, Arts & Entertainment Atlanta will seek out new partnership opportunities to explore the unfamiliar, stay relevant, and enhance Atlanta's innovative arts scene.
