The best outdoors activities for families in Atlanta and beyond

We love that Atlanta has made a concentrated effort to increase green space within the city and make it easy, accessible, and safe for families to enjoy. We love to spend time outside in the sun, soaking up the rays. Whenever we are hungry, we walk, talk, laugh, and find a place that is delicious, unique, and fun. There is something nourishing about spending time out in nature. It is more than just good family bonding time.

In metro Atlanta, there are a variety of outdoor destinations we love. Here is a list of some of them.

1. ATLANTA BELTLINE EASTSIDE TRAIL

ATL, 400 Park Drive NE. 30306

There is usually free parking on the streets around Historic Fourth Ward Park. Krog Street Market, Ponce City Market, and Piedmont Park offer paid parking. 10th Street and Monroe Drive are the starting points for the trail.

Through the center of Atlanta, the Atlanta BeltLine is a former railway corridor turned multiuse trail. As one of the city's most enjoyable experiences, it opened in 2005. In addition to 11 miles of paved, pedestrian-friendly paths, there are nearly 4 miles of unpaved trails on the Atlanta BeltLine. A 22-mile network of multi-use urban trails will be built, connecting Atlanta's intown neighborhoods as a whole.

Atlanta BeltLine Eastside Trail

On the wide, paved trail, bikers and hikers are joined by parents pushing strollers and teenagers zipping around on skateboards. Take some time to appreciate the politically motivated and socially conscious graffiti art throughout the trail, as well as the gorgeous wildflowers and city views. The hippest, most diverse ATLiens are waiting for you. Lastly, stop by Krog Street Market or Ponce City Market for a meal or sweet treat in this lively community setting.

The BeltLine offers FREE classes and activities, both in person and virtually, for the whole family. The one of my sons who skated took a class and the other who learned how to ride a bicycle took a lesson. Also on offer are yoga classes, bike tours, and pick-up soccer matches.

2. HISTORIC FOURTH WARD PARK

680 Dallas St. NE, Atlanta, GA 30308. 30308

You can usually park along North Angier Avenue, Morgan Street, Garden Park Drive, Dallas Street or Rankin Street.

Historic Fourth Ward Park

An old amusement park called Ponce de Leon is now at the heart of Historic Fourth Ward Park. One block south of Ponce City Market, this park is located in Old Fourth Ward. The park also includes a skate park as well as a splash pad, walking trails, and a playground. Admire the skill and finesse of skateboarders in the area. Try it on your own board if you dare.

You'll be happy to know that the entire park is ADA compliant, including the playground. An ADA ramp can be found at Garden Park Drive and Morgan Street.

3. CHATTAHOOCHEE RIVER

Located at 8800 Roberts Drive, Sandy Springs, Georgia. 30350

The daily parking fee is $5 per vehicle

In Atlanta, the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area is one of the coolest places to visit. It may not be near the ocean, but Chattahoochee River provides a lot of water fun. Tubing or kayaking down the river is an adventurous way to enjoy hooch. On the shaded trails that meander alongside the park, you can go for a stroll or a bike ride.

4. PACES MILL TRAIL

A list of addresses can be found here: 3444 Cobb Parkway, Atlanta, GA 30348. 30339

Fees: $5 per car per day for parking

The Paces Mill trail offers an exquisitely beautiful walk that isn't too strenuous. Parking is plentiful and easy to find in North Buckhead. In the middle of the city, this trail is like a secret garden. The wide paved path offers opportunities for walking and biking and you may even see colorful fish swimming in the Chattahoochee River tributaries.

A great place for beginning bike riders is this mostly flat path. There are very few sharp turns or narrow lanes, and it is generally uncrowded.

5. PIEDMONT PARK

Address: 400 Park Drive NE, Atlanta, GA 30308. 30306

The deck can be paid for, the gravel parking lot can be paid for, and street parking is limited

Central Park is located in New York City. Chicago has Grant Park. And Atlanta has Piedmont Park. That's how historic and iconic it is. One of the city's largest parks, Piedmont Park covers 185 acres in Midtown. Over the past 200 years, it has served as a site for family gatherings. It truly has something for everyone, with a well-maintained tennis court complex, pool, splash pad, two playgrounds, sand volleyball courts, ball fields and acres of green space.

Piedmont Park

The park's history is fascinating to me. Here in 1895, Booker T. Washington delivered the Atlanta Compromise speech, which later became famous. In the South, it provided the first ever African American speech to a racially mixed, but separate audience, and provided the framework for post-Reconstruction race relations. It gives me pride to walk through the imposing stone archways and appreciate the sense of history most people are unaware of. As I observe so many people enjoying this park with different backgrounds, I smile, knowing that we used to be unable to enjoy it.
