Arts & Entertainment Atlanta's inaugural year transforms it into a community-driven platform
Up until recently, pivoting was used in basketball or business when a fundamental change was needed in strategy or operation. Until five months ago, pivoting was not part of our daily vocabulary or a regular part of our everyday lives.
It was the intention of the Atlanta City Council when it established the Arts & Entertainment Atlanta district (A&E Atlanta) to create a neighborhood activation and economic development project in Downtown Atlanta by partnering with media companies and property owners.
A managed outdoor media concept is based on the idea of supporting downtown activity and providing an exciting, unique programming experience for the city. The revenue from the digital and static signs (limited to 25 locations within the district geography) helps support art partnerships and artistic endeavors with a particular emphasis on elevating local artists.
Arts & Entertainment Atlanta and other programs provide new opportunities for Downtown to serve as a creative nexus, in addition to being a hub of commercial and civic activity.
Late in 2019, signs began to appear online, and we began promoting 2020 as the first year of activations and programming. At the present time, there are seven active sign locations at sites including 101 Marietta, Peachtree Center, The Westin Peachtree Plaza, and others, and several more installations are in the process of being planned.
During our program's initial year, who knew that our reality would change so dramatically? And so, we pivoted. Through the support of Orange Barrel Media and BIG Outdoor, the signs have taken on a whole new meaning for the community. In addition to public service announcements about COVID-19 testing, Arts & Entertainment Atlanta showcases and supports local artists, such as Sarah Prices Separate Together, and provides a platform for the ongoing social justice movement.
In addition to using the signs to respond to current events, we have sustained arts programming. The current outdoor exhibit, In Light, explores connection in uncertain times. On three digital signs in the district, three of them are in On Light, curated by DASH and Mint Galley. They are located at 101 Marietta Street, 235 Peachtree Street (at Peachtree Center), and 89 Centennial Olympic Park Drive (at the Reverb Hotel by Hard Rock). Today, we yearn for connection and understanding more than ever, making art outdoors a powerful experience.
It's the quality of art that allows you to slow down, and for a moment see things you used to ignore as valuable. Kehinde Wiley
The first year of Arts & Entertainment Atlanta will explore the unfamiliar and find innovative ways to stay timely and responsive, while amplifying the work within Atlanta's remarkable arts community.
